Murray was in a race to regain fitness in New York, after withdrawing from his round of 16 match at the Cincinnati Open against Yannick Sinner in Toronto last week with an abdominal strain, only the seventh round of his long career. He also pulled out of Cincinnati afterward in an effort to recover in time for the final major of the year.
