Victor Hovland leads by six strokes going into Sunday’s final round of the PGA Tour Finals Championship after a four-under 66 in the third round.
The Norwegian, who won the BMW Championship last week to move into second place in the FedEx Cup standings, starts this week with eight under-20s.
“I don’t think I’ve played well before,” Hovland said.
Xander Shovell shot 68 to move him 14-under, one point behind fellow Americans Colin Morikawa and Keegan Bradley.
Rory McIlroy, who had a back problem, was nine years old.
The Northern Irishman, who scored a one-over 71, came from six shots to beat Scotty Scheffler to claim last year’s title.
World number one Scheffler, who started the tournament 10 points under par as the FedEx ranking leader, faced four bogeys on Saturday before hitting his solo game in the final as he scored 73 points to fall nine shots off the lead. At 11 o’clock under eastlake in atlanta.
Scheffler is tied with world number three John Rahm, who started the week at six and improved to 12-under after the second round but scored a 71 in the third on Saturday.
A thunderstorm stopped play for 75 minutes, but did not affect Hovland’s progress, and the world number five came out of the delay with birdie strikes on the 12th and 13th holes to achieve a seven-shot advantage.
However, Olympic champion Chauvel scored a 16th-place finish to give himself hope of emulating McIlroy’s exploits from last year.
Morikawa, who never landed a shot in his first 40 holes, bogeyed twice on the fifth hole and more putts went in the 10th and 11th as he scored 73 to drop to 13-under, while Bradley had four birdies and four bogeys on his par 70.
Sunday’s winner from the 30-player court will take home $18m (£14.3m) of the $75m prize pool.
